Handel's Choral masterpieces: Bach Elgar Choir
I am thrilled to announce that I will be performing as the tenor soloist in Handel’s Choral Masterpieces, a concert presented by the Bach Elgar Choir and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. This concert is a celebration of the life and works of George Frederic Handel, one of the greatest composers of all time. You will hear some of his most beautiful and powerful choral pieces, from his early Italian operas to his late English oratorios, culminating in the glorious Hallelujah chorus from his masterpiece Messiah. Along the way, you will learn about Handel’s fascinating biography, his struggles and triumphs, his influences and innovations, and his lasting legacy. This concert also features the stunning voice of soprano Bethany Hörst, as well as the expert direction of BEC Artistic Director Alexander Cann. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Handel’s Choral Masterpieces at the beautiful Ancaster Memorial Arts Centre on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available online or at the door. I hope to see you there!

The Steersman (Cover) - Flying Dutchman : Canadian Opera Company
The Flying Dutchman
In a fishing village, a young woman named Senta has become infatuated with the story of the Flying Dutchman, a sea captain condemned to sail for eternity. Legend has it that he has been cursed, and can only step ashore once every seven years—unless he finds true love.
When a ghostly ship anchors near her town’s harbour, Senta’s fantasies are put to the test in director Christopher Alden’s visually striking production, inspired by classic Expressionist cinema and Wagner’s feverish, Romantic score.

Les Quatre messes brèves de J.S. Bach
J.S. Bach Four Lutheran Masses
The final purpose of the four Missa brevis or Lutheran Masses Bach composed between 1737 and 1748 was never known. Traditionally, they would comprise only the Kyrie and Gloria, which would be divided in five movements. People sometimes look down on them because Bach added arias and chorals from earlier cantatas, when adapting to Latin speech, but they forget that the monumental Mass in B was also a “parody”… All in all, it is an unmissable occasion to rediscover these magnificent pieces, too often forgotten.

CARMEN
Music by Georges Bizet
Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy
Based on the story of the same name by French novelist, Prosper Mérimée
Sung in French with French dialogue; projected English translations
THE STORY As the workers at a Seville cigarette factory enter the city square on their lunch break, the sensual and seductive Carmen teasers her many admirers. Only the corporal Don José is resistant to her charms. Piqued by his disinterest, she playfully tosses a flower at him.
Later, Carmen is arrested for wounding a co-worker in a rowdy fight. Don José is to take her to prison, but has fallen under her spell and lets her escape. He later deserts the army to join Carmen and her band of smugglers, disregarding his life-long sweetheart and his dying mother. Carmen has tired of the jealous José however, and decides to take on a new lover, the bullfighter Escamillo. Jealousy ignites and José is pushed to the brink of obsessive madness that leads to shocking, murderous consequences.
THE ARTISTS Canadians making their mark will dominate the roster for this production. French-Canadian mezzo, Nora Sourouzian makes her company debut as the fiery temptress with the celebrated tenor David Pomeroy reprising his role as the obsessive corporal. Pomeroy was with MO last season as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. Baritone Tim Renner also makes his debut with the MO stage, this time in the role of Escamillo the bullfighter. Winnipegger Lida Szkwarek (Michaela), Johnathon Kirby (Morales/Dancairo), and Jean-Philippe Lazure (Remendado) make company debuts. Winnipeg-born soprano Lara Secord-Haid will sing Frasquita. Secord-Haid was last on the Manitoba Opera stage as Sophie in Werther. Brian Deedrick directs.
Tyrone Paterson will conduct both productions which also feature the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Manitoba Opera Chorus.

Ours- Georgie : Opera on the Avalon
Ours tracks the aftermath of the battle of Beaumont Hamel through the story of Thomas Nangle, who was chaplain to the Newfoundland Regiment. Following the war, he was named to the Imperial War Graves Commission where he led efforts to properly bury the remains of much of the lost regiment across Europe.
He established the existing five war memorial sites across Europe, including Beaumont Hamel, as well as the Newfoundland National War Memorial in St. John’s.
Nangle’s story of sacrifice, hardship, and renewal is the perfect human embodiment of Newfoundland’s journey through the war, and through its horrific aftermath.

Mozart Requiem - Grand Philharmonic Choir
Mozart died while writing his own Requiem. Perhaps that is why we still find this music – by turn terrifying, heartbreaking and serene, so compelling.
Also at this concert, you’ll experience powerful photographs Edward Burtynsky on the big screen while hearing soaring works by Tulev and Gjeilo.
Try Us Out! For this concert only, all tickets are $40 or less! That’s less than half the regular cost for best seats in the house.
Come early to see Burtynsky’s compelling photographs up close! From 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery will display some of the Burtynsky photos in its own collection. A curator will be on hand to talk about the art before the concert and also at intermission.
The Art Gallery is located in the same building, just across the hall from the concert theatre beside the box office.
